At slayer tower you would kill them quicker with melee so if that is what you need go with that path. Armor ought to be your best magic defense (Attack is melee but it's defense relies off magic so d'hide and so on ) or if you feel like praying (Bit of a waste unless you're fighting the mutated ones using a cannon) then best prayer protection and pray protect melee. For weapons go along with your greatest slash weapon.
However I personally would do range because they're quite amazing for range xp being basically giant meatsacks. Furthermore, there are plenty of semi-safespots throughout the slayer tower to range them from. Since you'd be attempting to safespot them (Obtaining them caught on walls, piles of rubble and such since they just take two squares) go to your best range bonus gear, archer helm/robin, best dragonhide, snakeskin boots/ranger.
For weapon either do magical shortbow or rune crossbow with whatever bolts/arrows you prefer. If you have done heritage of seergaze however and need the fastest xp have a cannon and prayer gear to the tunnels near the blood altar. Find the area with the mutated ones, pray melee, begin cannon, make sure automobile retaliate is on and go. Prices a reasonable sum of money to do so but it is easily among the fastet task you will get. And seeing as they have a large amount of hitpoints it's also one of the best for xp.
